INTRODUCTION

Sidney Sheldon began his tremendous career writing award winning works for television, film and the stage during the middle of the twentieth century. Well know for shows such as "I Dream of Jeannie", and "Hart to Hart," Sheldon went on to focus on novels, many of which became instant bestsellers. "Bloodline", (1977) and "Windmill of the Gods" (1987), among others, went on to become television miniseries. He once admitted "[Novels] never occurred to me," and yet he is now considered the best-selling novelist in the world, with his books in print in some thirty-nine countries, and was a recipient of a star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame.

BIOGRAPHY

Sidney Sheldon was born February 11th, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Northwestern University briefly during the mid-1930s, but didn't continue to peruse this avenue. He was in the U.S. Army Air Forces, and was discharged in 1941, at which time he collaborated with Ben Roberts on his first screenplays and Broadway productions. He won an Academy Award for best original screenplay in 1948 for The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947), then went on to write a list of screenplays which includes Easter Parade (1948), Annie Get Your Gun (1950), and Jumbo (1962). It seems his early success knew no restrictions, as he also won a Tony Award in 1959 for the Broadway Musical "Redhead".

In 1963 Sheldon began to create, produce, and write television series, for which he gain incredible popularity. The Patty Duke show (1963 - 1966) and I Dream of Jeannie (1967-1970) which received several Emmy Nominations. The Naked Face (1970) was Sheldon's first novel, and was awarded the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for best first mystery novel. This began a consistent stream of novels, which brought him the bestsellers list an extraordinary number of times, and included recently "The Stars Shine Down" (1992) and "Nothing Lasts Forever" (1994).

  • Academy Award ("Oscar") for best original screenplay, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 1948, for The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer; Screen Writers' Guild Award for best musical of the year, 1948, for Easter Parade, and 1950, for Annie Get Your Gun; Antoinette Perry Award ("Tony"), 1959, for book of Redhead; Emmy Awards for I Dream of Jeannie; Edgar Award for best first mystery novel, Mystery Writers of America, and New York Times citation for best first mystery novel, both 1970, both for The Naked Face; recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Other Side of Midnight was made into a film by Twentieth Century-Fox in 1977; Bloodline was filmed by Paramount in 1979, and was re-edited by Sheldon and shown as an ABC miniseries in 1982; Rage of Angels, for which Sheldon served as executive producer, became an NBC miniseries in 1983, and inspired a 1986 sequel which Sheldon also produced; CBS broadcast miniseries adaptations of Master of the Game in 1984, If Tomorrow Comes in 1986, and Windmills of the Gods in 1988; The Naked Face was filmed by Cannon in 1985; The Sands of Time has been optioned.
